Terms of service.
These terms govern your use of Altera Labs' websites and applications, including the AI tutor at app.altera-labs.com and our Canvas integration (together, the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to them. If you use Altera through your institution, the agreement between Altera Labs and your institution also applies, and where the two conflict for education records, that agreement wins.
01The service.
Altera is an AI tutor that builds a live mastery model of each student in a Canvas course so instructors know what to re-teach. The Service is currently offered in a beta stage: features may change, and availability is not guaranteed.
02Accounts and eligibility.
You need an account to use the Service, usually created through your institution's Canvas launch. Keep your credentials to yourself and tell us promptly about any unauthorized use. The Service is built for higher education and is not directed to children under 13.
03Your content and your records.
You and your institution own your content: conversations, uploaded materials, and learning records. You grant Altera Labs a limited license to process that content solely to operate, secure, and improve the Service for your course. Our handling of education records is governed by FERPA and our institutional data processing agreements, as described in the Privacy Policy. We do not sell your content and we do not permit it to be used to train foundation models.
04Acceptable use.
- Follow your institution's academic integrity policies. Altera is built to teach, not to complete assessed work for you.
- Do not probe, disable, or circumvent security or rate limits, or access another person's records.
- Do not use the Service to harass, or to submit content that is unlawful or infringes others' rights.
- Do not scrape the Service or resell access without a written agreement with us.
05AI-generated output.
The tutor's responses are generated by AI. They can be wrong, incomplete, or misleading, and mastery estimates are statistical estimates, not certifications of knowledge. Verify important information independently; instructors remain responsible for grading and pedagogical decisions.
06Intellectual property.
The Service, including its software, design, and branding, belongs to Altera Labs and its licensors. These terms grant you no rights in it beyond the access needed to use the Service.
07Termination.
You can stop using the Service and delete your data at any time (see the Privacy Policy for how deletion works). We may suspend or end access for breach of these terms, or when your institution's agreement ends, in which case education records are handled per that agreement.
08Disclaimers and liability.
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Altera Labs is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your institution's rights under its agreement with us.
09Governing law.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Maryland.
10Changes.
We may update these terms; the effective date above will change when we do. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms. For material changes affecting an active pilot we will notify the institution.
